Scientists are constantly monitoring how the virus spreads. There is no evidence to suggest that food and food packaging is a likely route of transmission for the SARS‑CoV‑2 virus. How to shop for your groceries during the pandemic?

  • Make a shopping list
  • Keep a distance in queues – ideally 1.5 m. Avoid large groups of people and if you can do the shopping online, do it.
  • Wear a mask – you have to cover your nose and mouth in shops and in other enclosed spaces.
  • Use disposable gloves when shopping.
  • Use payment cards and electronic payments.
  • Do not pick through or touch food that is to be eaten without washing or cooking – e.g. bread, confectionery, fruit and vegetables.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth when shopping.
  • Coronavirus does not multiply on the surface of food packaging – it only multiplies in human or animal bodies, so you do not need to disinfect packaging, but wash your hands after unpacking your shopping and before eating.
  • At home, wash fruit and vegetables and then dry them or leave them to dry. Meat, poultry and eggs should always be cooked at 70°C – coronaviruses and other viruses and bacteria are killed at 70°C.
If alarming symptoms appear, i.e. persistent fever above 39°C, shortness of breath, chest pain and petechiae, immediately call the Medicover Hot Line (500 900 999) or emergency services (112)
